  • Theme A: Complex Carbohydrates

    Theme A focuses on enzymes and pathways that can create high value products from plant polymers and chemicals (e.g. hemicellulose coatings, bioactive cellulose, & nutraceuticals). Link

  • Theme B: Polymer precursors

    Theme B develops difunctional chemicals for polymer production from renewable resources . The focus is on industrially-important polymer precursors (enzymes and pathways for the synthesis of the dicarboxylic acids, adipic acid and maleic acid), novel enzymes for carboxylation and decarboxylation reactions, and biodegradable bioplastics (polylactic acid depolymerases).   • Theme C: Fungal metabolites

    Theme C generates natural fungal products and their derivatives . The goal is to over-produce compounds such as polyketides, nonribosomal peptides, terpenes and alkaloids from fungi because of their bioactive properties. Link

  • Theme D: Emerging technologies

    Theme D develops technologies for enzyme discovery and host optimization that addresses current bottlenecks by developing novel computational and experimental tools and technologies (functional characterization of enzymes, strain design, and strain optimization using the newly discovered CRISPR associated Cas9 system).
